This music was originally composed by Ben Luce while wandering over many years with guitar in hand through the breathtaking canyon lands and mountainsides of Northern New Mexico, particularly those surrounding Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The Pajarito ( pronounced “Pa-ha-REE-toe”) Plateau, into which deep canyons have been cut by erosion over the eons, is an immense plateau formed of the volcanic tuff ejected from immense eruptions 1 to 2 million years ago. The Plateau stretches out to the east from the Jemez Mountains, which today encircle the immense "Valle Caldera", one of the largest intact volcanic calderas in the world. The album cover photo shows some of the fantastic mesa at the eastern edge of the Plateau, with a super-moon rise over the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains, just north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Search Google images with names such as "Frijoles Canyon", "Pajarito Plateau", "Jemez Mountains", etc, to see numerous images of the endless beauty of this region.

Besides abundant natural beauty, the canyons of the plateau, which include Bandelier National Monument, are pocketed with the ancient cliff dwellings, rock art, and the worn pathways of ancestral pueblo peoples, the descendants of whom still inhabit the region today and are known widely for their fascinating culture, and their beautiful and unique ceramic arts. The Plateau is also the home to abundant wildlife, including large ravens, mountain lions, elk, mule deer, coyotes, rattle snakes, and tarantulas. Pinyon-juniper forest is found throughout, along with some ponderosa pines, sagebrush, and blue grama grass.

Large forest fires have impacted the area significantly recently, as searches on Google images will also show, but the area, especially the canyons, remain incredibly beautiful and ecologically rich.

Pronunciation Guide (from the Spanish):
Pajarito – “Pa-ha-REE-toe” - Spanish for "little bird"
Jemez – “HAY-mez” - a Spanish transliteration of the Pueblo word "Hemish", meaning "the people". This word today refers to both the people of Jemez Pueblo, and also the Jemez Mountains, from which the Pajarito Plateau extends.
Frijoles – “Free-HO-lays” - Spanish for "beans". Frijoles Canyon is an important part of Bandelier National Monument, which is a great destination for visitors to the area.

The Desert Suite is dedicated to all who have lived among and loved these special places since time beyond memory.
