about

This composition imagines encounters with 8th Century Tang Dynasty "Earth Spirits" and "Tomb Guardians," called "Zhen Mu Shou" in Chinese (literally "tomb guardians"), as one makes the passage into the afterlife. Small statues of these spirits were placed in tombs to protect the tombs, but also to protect the living from interference by the spirits of the dead. Images of these spirits can be seen in the accompanying video to this piece posted at youtu.be/3nZuoHTie9w.
